And by just how much of that was weird, repetitive, convoluted, and sometimes straight-up incoherent (what was Ocelot even doing? Why did Naomi do half the stuff she did? Who knows), that's an impressive feat. I loved some of Itoh's additions (I agree with like, all of his headcanons about Naomi), and appreciated a lot of his other artistic choices (cutting out the Beauty & Beast Unit was honestly a really good decision), and just, he did his damnedest to make all the stuff in MGS4 make coherent narrative, emotional, and thematic sense - and still be compelling in non-interactive, non-visual prose form. I didn't fully agree with all his character interpretations, but unlike the other MGS adaptations out there, I see where he was coming from with them, and respect them.
